Entry

No visa for tourism, FMM required: US citizens do not need a Mexican visa for tourism, business visits without paid work, or transit. You need a valid passport and an FMM (Forma Migratoria Multiple), the visitor permit,...

Fee

Maximum stay: up to 180 days per entry, as a maximum only. The immigration officer sets the actual number of days, and that number is written on your permit or passport stamp. Check it before you leave the immigration...

Stay and validity

One entry only: the FMM is valid for one entry only, per the INM conditions opened on 24 October 2026. Leaving Mexico ends that permit, and a new permit is needed for a new entry.

Passport

Cost: 983 Mexican pesos in 2026 for visitors without permission to do paid work, and usually included in airfare for air passengers. This fee figure is from the Mexican federal fee decree linked below, Article 8,...

These indicators are taken from the entry checklist further down this page. Entry rules change, so check the official sources below before you book or travel. This is not immigration or legal advice.

Apply here, nowhere else

US citizens do not need a Mexican visa for a tourist visit. What you need is a valid passport and, except where the border-zone rules apply, an FMM visitor permit. Do not buy that permit from a lookalike site that adds a fee for the form itself.

  • Instituto Nacional de Migracion (INM): Forma Migratoria Multiple, online application - official Mexican immigration page, opened directly on 24 October 2026. Its conditions state that the FMM obtained by electronic means gives visitor status without permission to work, has a maximum validity of 180 calendar days, is valid for one entry only, and that the validity term starts when the migratory stamp is fixed. Fees paid for the condition of stay are not a guarantee of entry.

For entry rules, not for applying, also check US Department of State: Mexico, opened in full and rechecked 25 October 2026. No other official apply link is printed here. If you need a visa for a purpose other than a tourist visit, or a stay beyond what a visitor permit allows, check the Mexican government site directly and use the Mexican consulate for your area. Do not use a copycat site that charges extra for the form.

Scouting trip budget, fixed maths

Flights are per person, the room is shared, daily spending is per person. Trip total is for all travellers. Per person is trip total divided by travellers, per day is trip total divided by days, with no extra flight added. All figures below are editable examples, not sourced flight or hotel prices. Any FMM fee paid outside airfare is not in this total, add it separately if it applies to you.

Quick estimate first: start with trip length, travellers, flights, and stay. Open Refine for daily spending, buffer, and any entry fee.

Refine: show more inputs

Worked example, checked: 7 days, 2 travellers, $450 flights per person, $150 room per night, $80 daily per person, 10% buffer. Base is (2 x $450) + ($150 x 7) + (2 x $80 x 7) = $3,070. With buffer, $3,377 total, $482 per day (rounded), $1,689 per person (rounded). Flight and hotel figures are editable examples only.

Entry checklist, short visit

  • No visa for tourism, FMM required: US citizens do not need a Mexican visa for tourism, business visits without paid work, or transit. You need a valid passport and an FMM (Forma Migratoria Multiple), the visitor permit, not a visa.
  • Maximum stay: up to 180 days per entry, as a maximum only. The immigration officer sets the actual number of days, and that number is written on your permit or passport stamp. Check it before you leave the immigration hall. You must leave by the end of the days granted, even if that is fewer than 180.
  • One entry only: the FMM is valid for one entry only, per the INM conditions opened on 24 October 2026. Leaving Mexico ends that permit, and a new permit is needed for a new entry.
  • Cost: 983 Mexican pesos in 2026 for visitors without permission to do paid work, and usually included in airfare for air passengers. This fee figure is from the Mexican federal fee decree linked below, Article 8, fraction I, not from the INM page opened that day, so verify it at INM before travel. It is not included in the trip-budget calculator below, so add it separately if you will pay it outside your airfare.
  • Passport: a valid and current passport, per the INM conditions. A US passport card can only be used at land border crossings and for visiting the border zone. It cannot be used for international air trips or for travel into the interior of Mexico. For air travel, use a passport book.
  • Land entry: if you enter by land, stop at an INM office to obtain and stamp the FMM, even if you are not explicitly directed to do so. The online form alone does not activate the permit until it is stamped at the border facility. Exception: if you are staying within 12 miles (20 kilometres) of the US border for 6 days or less, you do not need an FMM, per the US Department of State page linked below.
  • Air entry: at many airports the paper FMM has been replaced by a passport stamp or a digital record. Keep that stamp or receipt until you leave, because it is your proof of legal entry and of the days granted.
  • No paid work: visitor status is without permission to work. Paid work needs a different immigration route, with its own advice.
  • Transit: visa-exempt travellers, including US citizens, are reported as able to remain in international areas without additional documentation when transiting a Mexican airport. If you pass through immigration, the normal visitor rules apply. Verify your exact transit case before travel.
  • Not a move: a visitor permit does not give residence permission. Living in Mexico needs a separate immigration route, with its own advice.
  • Processing window: no processing promise is stated on this page. The FMM is obtained and stamped at entry, or through the online form stamped at the border, per the INM conditions. Verify the current process at INM before travel.

Carry your passport and your proof of legal status with you in Mexico. Immigration checkpoints are common in the interior, including in popular tourist areas, and officers may ask to see both documents at any point.

From scouting trip to move

A scouting trip answers questions a calculator cannot: which town feels right, what daily life actually costs there, and whether Mexico in your travel season is a place you want to live. If the trip goes well, the next step is proper residence advice, not a longer visitor stay.

There is no exact matching move page for this route in the current guides, so there is no move page to link to here.
